The main health problem in this breed is hip and elbow dysplasia. It’s an inherited developmental disease in young dogs of many large breeds. It can be diagnosed by X-ray, but there is no cure for it found yet. Dogs that are trained for a demanding activity suffer from this disorder more than toy dogs. Breeding quality dogs should be free from hip dysplasia. OFA certification lessens the chanses of dysplasia in a pup, but doesn’t guarantee that a dog will be free from this disorder for its whole life.

This breed is not for everyone, as it is very active, needs a lot of exercises and much room, sheds heavily twice a year, likes to dig and swim. These dogs need to be with people and may become destructive if left alone for a long time. This breed makes poor watchdogs or one-man dogs, but forms close bonds with all members of the family. Often, these dogs will not attack strangers, but will try to play with everybody. Their natural curiosity sometimes causes them to run away and loose the way back.
