Check the retrieving instincts of the puppy before buying it and look at the pedigree. No matter what you are buying the pups for, avoid the following: seeing the puppies before they are 4 weeks old, buying a shy or aggressive puppy or an animal with a dull coat, signs or diarrhea, poor appetite. Be ready that the reliable breeder asks you many questions.

These dogs have been in the US since the late 19th century, but there was no serious interest in them until about 1930's. The AKC recognized this breed in 1932. The GRCA, the largest of the parent breed clubs in the AKC, was founded in 1938. In England, these dogs became very popular in the end of the 19th century. The first dogs of this breed were registred by the Kennel Club of England in 1903. First, these dogs were called Flat Coats. Dogs with yellow coats became a separate breed in 1911.
