Puppies of this breed are sometimes fairly unruly, which makes their owners surrender them. Once they reach maturity, some dogs remain very active and fun-loving, which annoys their owners who would like to have a quieter pet. Though the breed is noted for its intelligence, it needs much training and interaction with the family. Only with proper training, these dogs develop exceptionally patient demeanor and the only desire they have is to please the owner. Being very forgiving, these dogs make good first-time pets for novice owners and children who treat them with respect.

Sometimes the owners can no longer care for them because of a disease, divorce or other family problems. Financial and housing changes, allergies and lack of time may force people to give up their pets. Many dogs are taken from shelters or are found unclaimed strays in the street with no collar or microchips. Sometimes they are removed from abusive owners.
