For people who aren't prepared to go through the socialization and training of a pup, an older dog or even a senior pet can be a good alternative. If a young dog has to spend much time unsupervised, it will never develop into a reliable pet, but if a well-trained and socialized dog is left alone, it will soon adapt to the new conditions. A Golden Retriever of any age can become a good family companion, if well cared for. Second hand dogs easily form close bonds with their new families and forget the troubles they had.
