This breed appeared because of a growing demand for perfect hunting dogs. There appeared many crosses of the hunting breeds already existing in the late 19th century, but only these dogs were considered excellent for bringing downed fowl both from the land and water. The breed owes its origin to the first Lord Tweedmouth who crossbred several hunting breeds, such as the Tweed Water Spaniel, Irish Setter, Bloodhound, Newfoundland and several others. The Kennel Club of England registered this breed in 1903 as Flat Coats. By the middle of the 20th century, breed clubs were formed in other countries as well.
