Golden Retrievers - Breed History

Golden Retrievers were developed in Britain in the 1800s. The Tweed Water Spaniel, now extinct, the Newfoundland, the Irish Setter and a variety of water spaniels were used in the formation of the Golden Retriever. Lord Tweedmouth is considered to have played an important role in the formation of the breed. The Golden Retriever was meant to be faithful and kind, energetic and affectionate. The dog had to be a perfect swimmer and have an ability to retrieve.

Early Golden Retrievers were shown in England as Flat-Coated Retrievers. Possibly, the Golden Retriever came to North America in the 1890s. Golden Retrievers did not participate in dog shows until the 1920s.

The origin of the golden Retriever breed is less vague than the history of some other retriever breeds. Lord Tweedmouth kept accurate records and notes during his breeding. In 1868, the Lord mated a Tweed Water Spaniel to a yellow retriever. This cross gave yellow breed now known as the Golden Retriever. Golden Retrievers are a breed with both hunting skill and beauty.

The Golden Retriever has become a very popular family dog, which is nowadays a constant concern of those involved with the breed. It is essential to always keep in mind the original purpose of Golden Retrievers. First and foremost, it is a hunting dog and a family companion. Golden Retrievers produced by responsible breeders, are sound in mind and body. They excel in various performance fields. Golden Retrievers are great pets for responsible and devoted owners.
